A small to medium deciduous, ornamental which grows tree to 15' tall by 15' wide at maturity. The tree has upright young vase growth if grown in the open. Then tree grows round or irregularly-shaped and usually leans with age. Branching is low. Vegetative buds are small purple-brown and flower buds are plumper and grow in clusters. Leaves are medium green and slowly turn to dark green with a chartreuse fall color. They are broadly ovate, but overall heart-shaped. Flowers bloom pink-lavender in early Spring before foliage. Ornamental orange-brown bark appears with age. Growth is rapid while young, but slows to medium at about ten years. Hardy in zones 4 to 9.
