Family: Ericaceae

A relatively dense, slow growing upright to rounded shrub. Older plants can become irregular in outline Dark evergreen green leaves are ovate-elliptic 2-4" long with a brown scaly underside. Flowering midseason (about mid May-June on campus) with trusses of 6-12 funnel - to bell- shaped, pink to rosy purple. This shrub does best in protected locations, though can tolerate open areas if protected from the wind. Prefers light shade from a high canopy, and moist, well-drained, acidic soils. Grows to approximately 12' high and wide..Landscape uses include mass plantings, shrub borders and as a foundation plant. This shrub can be found in the Campus Entrance Gardens and Athletic Center Gardens. Hardiness zones: 5-9
