Multimode Underwater Beacon

In the underwater navigation of vehicles such as AUVs it can be very difficult to obtain accurate bearing estimates during travel. Many systems require the vehicle to surface frequently to obtain accurate location data via satellite. This project investigates the use of a multi-mode transducer which operates in both “omni” and “1” mode to be used as an underwater beacon. By modulating the signals of elements which offer quadrat-pole directivity in conjunction with an onmi mode signal, the phase of a received signal (in comparison to some reference) can be used to determine a bearing angle.
