Primary Author(s)

Background/Purpose: Transition to practice, the most vulnerable time in the career of nurses, results in up to 50% attrition in the first year. Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies (NOFNCC) identifies the professional knowledge, attitudes, and skills central to safe and effective practice. A partnership examined if there is an improvement in posttest scores among study participants following an educational intervention using NOFNCC based on a pilot of a tool to measure their attainment. Method: Convenience samples, one-group pretest-posttest design for subject groups, transitioning new nurses (N=38), their preceptors (N=33), and graduate students (N=6). Interventions were incorporated into agency orientation, preceptor education, and graduate student education. Descriptive statistics determined group means on NCAT scores. Results: Gaps were noted across study groups. NCAT refinement is needed. Conclusions & Implications: Ascertaining nurses’ knowledge gaps may contribute to competency-based education, streamlining orientation programs, and strengthening the nurse workforce.Funding provided by the MA DHE Nursing Education Redesign Grant Program
