19th Annual UMass Dartmouth Research Exhibition

University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Chapter of Sigma Xi will hold a two-day research exhibition by faculty and graduate/undergraduate students on April 23rd & 24th, 2013. The exhibition will follow the format of poster sessions at professional society meetings, and will be held at the Library Addition.

Information for participants

Faculty and students - both undergraduate and graduate- are encouraged to submit an abstract for presentation at the exposition. All members of the University community are cordially invited to participate in the exhibition to see the research activities of our colleagues.

The deadline for registration and abstract submission is Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at 11:59 PM. The registration and abstract submission must be done using the Sigma Xi web site. When you have a final abstract, fill out the registration form. If you have any questions about the registration or abstract submission procedure, contact Professor Grant O'Rielly (Physics) or Elizabeth Winiarz (Science Librarian). Space considerations limit the number of exhibitors to 100. In the event that the number of participants exceeds capacity, the Organizing Committee will consider the earliest submissions first.

If you are not familiar with the style of poster sessions, you should consult your research advisor or any member of the Organizing Committee (listed below) for advice. Exhibitors will be expected to be present at their posters for two hours on Tuesday afternoon and two hours on Wednesday morning. The posters should be removed before noon on Wednesday. Abstracts will be posted on the Sigma Xi web site and also printed in a booklet that will be used to promote the exhibition and will be made available to presenters and attendees.

Three-part hinged display boards (approx. 30 x 60 inches) will be made available to the presenters for mounting text and figures. Please organize your display so that mounting can be done using tacks or binder clips, not tape that damages the display boards. Please indicate the need for an electrical outlet on the registration form.

Abstract Preparation And Submission Guidelines

  1. The abstract should describe the objectives, methods, and results of the research, and should be written for a non-specialist.
  2. The abstract, including title and authors' names, will be formatted to fit into a limited space. Because of this the text of the abstract must not exceed 1,180 characters including spaces. (Approximately 225 words). You should write the abstract in your word processor, then check its length. (With Microsoft Word choose "word count" from the "tools" menu. It will tell you the number of words, as well as the number of characters with spaces.)
  3. Once you are satisfied that your abstract meets the length restrictions you may simply cut and paste it into the online form. Please note: The form includes some duplicate information to ease the process of making the abstract booklet, as well as providing a record of participants.
