Biography
Dr. Richard J. Panofsky is the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Graduate Studies. He came to UMass Dartmouth in 1989. Dr. Panofsky obtained his Ph.D. in English from the University of California Santa Barbara. Reporting to him are the Directors of the Advising Center, Academic Resources Center, Institutional Research, University Enrollment Center, and the University Registrar. In related work, he advises on academic requirements and regulations, serves as the administrator on the SFAAC academic policy committee, edits the General and Graduate Catalogues, and administers international academic exchange agreements.
His office produces enrollment projections and develops methodology and instruments for enrollment planning. It also produces systematic data on faculty instructional activity, used in enrollment planning, resource allocation, and to plan for and meet class space needs for incoming and returning students. He meets with two others as a team to advise the Provost on enrollment planning and management (Burke, Panofsky, Briggs) and is a member of the campus Enrollment Implementation Team. Moreover, Dr. Panofsky approves course and curriculum changes for the Provost and assists departments and colleges in the development of new academic programs and serves as liaison with the UMass central administration for this process.
Dr. Panofsky chairs the campus Graduate Council, represents UMD with the UMass Graduate Deans, and assists the Provost in graduate program and budget development, graduate enrollment and strategic planning, and developing new models in collaboration with DCE for part-time graduate programs. He serves as the UMD liaison to our regional accrediting body, the New England Association of Schools & Colleges (NEASC), manages the academic program review process called Academic Quality and Development (AQAD); oversees the reviews of academic Centers; and assists the Provost with the Periodic Multi-Year Review (PMYR) process. Dr. Panofsky also provides leadership to assist colleges and other units in developing assessment and initiatives for student engagement (for example, learning communities).
