This book was a class project, created by the students in Isabel Pina-Britt's Kindergarten 2 class at the Samuel W. Mason Elementary School, Roxbury, MA, with the assistance of Linda Caswell, a doctoral student at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. All of the illustrations were done by the children in the class (their names are cited in the book). The text is a children's adaptation of one of the famous Nho Lobu stories from Cape Verde. The text was written according to the guidelines of the new proposed orthography for Capeverdean Creole, ALUPEC, with the help of Manuel Da Luz Gonçalves.
This book is the first of many Capeverdean Creole literacy projects that we have worked on in the classroom. We continue to develop materials for and with the students. We are putting this book on the Home Page for your enjoyment and in the hopes that it will start a dialogue with others who are interested in working on literacy materials in Capeverdean Creole. Please contact us if you have any questions or comments. You can contact Isabel at the Mason School, (617) 635-8405, by email or you can contact Linda at caswelli@hugse1.harvard.edu. Thanks!
