Ian Day named new Athletic Director at UMass Dartmouth
7/13/2007(Dartmouth, MA) -- Ian Day of Tiffin, Ohio has been named Athletic Director at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Chancellor Dr. Jean MacCormack and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. Jean Kim made the announcement Friday afternoon.
Day will leave Tiffin (OH) University in August and take over as Athletic Director from Louise Goodrum, who served as Interim Athletic Director at UMass Dartmouth for the last 14 months. Upon Day's arrival in September, Goodrum will return to her duties as Associate Director of Athletics in the Athletic Department.
"We are very fortunate to have hired such an experienced Athletic Director in Ian Day," said Dr. Jean Kim, the new Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at UMass Dartmouth. "I am looking forward to working with our new Athletic Director and the entire department. Ian will have a tremendous advantage as begins his new role because he will be able to build on the great teamwork of the department, especially the work done by Louise Goodrum as the interim director."
In his new duties at UMass Dartmouth, Day will oversee an NCAA Division III athletic department sponsoring 25 varsity sports with close to 500 student athletes, along with active intramural, recreational and instructional programs and the campus Fitness Center.
"I am honored to have been selected Athletic Director at UMass Dartmouth," said Day. "There are very few schools I would leave Tiffin for, but UMass Dartmouth has all the attributes anyone would want. It is clear to me why the institution has grown and become a school of choice. It offers a quality education, they have an impressive faculty and staff and it's in a terrific location. I am excited about the opportunity of working with the administration, athletic staff, students and all of the departments on campus, as well as being involved in the community as quickly as possible."
Day takes over a UMass Dartmouth athletic program which produced several successes last year. The Corsairs have an NCAA Division III national track champion and a five-time All-American in senior Jon Garcia and an ice hockey team which finished as one of the top eight teams in the NCAA national tournament for a second straight year. The Corsairs also had two Coach of the Year honorees last season, Nicole Castonguay in field hockey and ice hockey's John Rolli. UMass Dartmouth has also added several new coaches in the last year, namely Castonguay, softball coach Kelly Roy, football coach Mark Robichaud and volleyball coach Steve DeRossi.
Day comes to the UMass Dartmouth campus following a long and distinguished career at Tiffin University, where he served as Director of Athletics since 1990. He was instrumental in guiding the Dragons through the expansion of their facilities, helping oversee the growth of the Athletic Department from 10 sponsored sports to 18, guiding the university from the American Mideast Conference to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (which the Dragons will join beginning in the 2008-09 season), and leading Tiffin University out of the NAIA and into full NCAA Division II status. Along the way, Tiffin's athletic programs made 21 national tournament appearances.
Day is exiting the university after a strong 2006-07 season, one which was highlighted with Tiffin's second consecutive American Mideast Conference Women's All-Sports Trophy and national tournament trips for women's soccer, women's golf, softball, men's golf, and men's and women's track and field.
Originally hired as Tiffin's first men's soccer coach in 1983, Day guided the Dragons to become one of the NAIA's elite soccer powers. Under Day, TU won 10 Mid-Ohio Conference Championships, one American Mideast Conference title, and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament four times. In addition, the Dragons won four Area 6 and District 22 titles. Under Day's tenure, the Dragons averaged 16 wins a season. He earned seven Coach of the Year honors while compiling a record of 345-139-28 over 24 years (.713).
Born in Walsall, England, Day was both an All-American and Academic All-American soccer player at Alderson-Broaddus College in West Virginia, where he graduated in 1982. Day obtained his Master's degree from Purdue University. He is married and has three children.
